Yangon is the commercial capital of Myanmar, attracting migrant workers from across the country. It is also the major hub for national NGOs and civil society organizations. Beyond the central city, numerous new neighbourhoods are emerging around a developing manufacturing industry, in the outskirts of the city. This increase in factory workers, especially migrants from other parts of Myanmar, is leading to the formation of large scale informal settlements, and urban poverty is rising. This urban poverty is naturally being exacerbated by the job loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Contrary to other parts of Myanmar, humanitarian action does not normally face significant barriers as this is the most developed and accessible part of the country.
